An accomplished figure in the world of internal medicine, infectious diseases, and hepatology, Dr. Martin Wächtler has accrued more than four decades of expertise as a physician, specialist, and lecturer in the field. Since 2020, he has excelled as a physician in public health service in Munich, Germany. He previously dedicated 32 years to the Hospital Schwabing Munich, the Academic Teaching Hospital of the University of Munich, the Technical University of Munich, and Clinic for Hematology, Oncology, Immunology, Palliative Medicine, Infectiology and Tropical Medicine. Across these institutions, he excelled as a resident physician and educator who took great pride in always being relevant and up-to-date with his lectures and helping his students achieve their academic and professional goals in the process.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Wächtler has been recognized particularly for his research and fieldwork in HIV and AIDS. Early on in his medical journey, he saw the first European AIDS patient in Frankfurt and subsequently ingratiated himself with the community, accompanying patients with treatment, diagnosis, and lectures. He’s contributed numerous articles to professional journals on infectious disease and hepatology and authored the 2014 publication “AIDS: Major Opportunistic Infections.”
Although he grew up in a German Christian household, and his father was a priest, Dr. Wächtler was always interested in the sciences. He gravitated from a young age to psychology, biology, chemistry, nature, and medicine, as well as human affairs, human nature, and how medicine affects all of it. Upon earning an undergraduate degree, he attained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Frankfurt in 1984 and served a residency at the German Heart Center in Munich from 1985 to 1987. In addition, he’s bolstered his credentials over the years with myriad certifications in his field, from internal medicine to hepatology, from the Bavarian Medical Association and German Society for Infectious Diseases, among others. In addition, he’s long been a member of such organizations as the German Society of Internal Medicine and the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases.
While he went on leave from the clinic in 2020 to dedicate his time and energy to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Wächtler never abandoned it. To this day, he still counsels, teaches, and provides lectures to his colleagues at the clinic.
